Most of us have noticed our attention span has shortened—and considerably. No matter what we do, we can’t seem to stay focused on anything for more than a minute, and when we do it’s usually not as in-depth as it used to be.
AN ANALOGY
A good analogy would be the difference between being a scuba driver exploring a certain sea creature and being a jet skier skimming across the ocean’s surface at a high speed.

One Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
1 THE PACE
It seems like time is flying by faster than ever. There appears to be less of a need to strive to be a perfectionist at anything. By the time we produce something top-notch or become an expert at doing something, it’s quickly outdated. Our society now is more inclined to be in the moment, and willing to settle for mediocre.
Another Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
2 TOO MUCH OUTSIDE STIMULUS
Because of technology and social media, we are subjected to large amounts of information from countless sources. Everywhere we look there are opinions on everything, who often request our point of view. It’s easy to lose focus and get overwhelmed.
Another Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
3 PAUSED OR DECREASED FAITH
More and more of us are going through a shift in our belief in a Higher Source or our definition of what it is. Perhaps it’s getting more difficult to not let our spiritual practices be put on the back burner, or maybe we find ourselves not as enthused about organized religion’s teachings. It might have felt easier to stay focused when we believed we were being guided and that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.
Another Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
4 THE LOSS OF PURPOSE
A lot of us found a sense of purpose in our work or in having a family. But with the deterioration of a common goal that benefited absolutely everyone long-term without anyone making sacrifices, having a sense of purpose has declined.
Major corporations seem to have turned their focus away from valuing workers, customers, and the environment to making more profits. Then the threat of AI replacing us soon is looming over most of our heads causing us to think that our job or career is short-term.
Even the promise of staying with one person for life and keeping the family together has changed. Commitments have become more flexible. Children are often being raised by people other than just their birth parents. And it’s not uncommon to lose touch with family members that used to be close.
Another Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
5 EXTREME EVENTS
Many of us have a hard time focusing for any length of time when there is an unstable world, especially if we are sensitive or empathic.
Another Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
6 FEELING DEPRESSED
Most of us are having difficulty feeling confident that our dreams will come true, which makes it hard to fight off feeling depressed.
Feeling depressed is thinking we can’t have what we want and never will.
Believing that we will have our dreams come true really increases our ability to concentrate for longer periods of time.
Another Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
7 MOVING INTO LESS DOING AND MORE THINKING
We are in a period that is shifting us from spending time doing things and taking physical action to spending more time thinking and reflecting, which is greatly needed. Because automation, technology, and AI have been constantly evolving, it’s pushing us to shift with it.
Another Reason Why Our Attention Span Might be Shorter is…
8 OUR GRASP OF CONCEPTS IS QUICKER
Just a few years ago most of us needed an in-depth explanation to grasp a concept. Look how the popularity of reading non-fiction books has declined, but watching a short video, or audio, on the same subject has increased. Maybe minds are linked and once somebody learns something, others catch on a lot quicker.
What Do We Do About It?
Resisting something that is changing, even our attention span, makes it harder on us to accept it. Change is not bad, it’s just different.
Everything, whether we understand it or not, works in our favor.
