7 Ways We Are Becoming Less Dependent on Others

Are you finding yourself reacting to others differently? Are your long-term relationships getting more difficult to manage? Is your alone time becoming more important? Here are 7 ways we are becoming less dependent on others.

One Way is Being Aware…

1  WE ARE SATISFYING OUR OWN NEEDS

More and more of us are finding ways to fulfill our own needs. We used to completely depend on others for certain needs, especially with finances,  companionship, food, shelter, household duties, errands, child care, safety, and sex. When we depended on others, sometimes we got our needs met, but most of the time they fell short. Eventually, we get sick and tired of being disappointed.

Now, many of us are learning to make the necessary adjustments by prioritizing our needs, finding easier ways to accomplish them, making plan Bs, having fewer expectations of others, and with a lot less stress.

2   OF THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING OUR INNER WORK

If we take time to do our inner work (the practice of changing our thoughts, perceptions, attitudes, and emotions to more loving ones) life gets a lot easier. Inner work is a major factor in our ability to be aware of our intuition or inner guidance.

3  OF THE DURATION OF OUR RELATIONSHIPS

Hardly any kind of relationship lasts very long now which makes depending on certain individuals difficult. Our relationships seem to be changing at a faster pace than before, whether it’s with staying in our marriage, relatives we lost track of, coworkers that take other jobs, or friends we have less in common with.  It’s like the cycle of most of our relationships has been accelerated—meeting, transforming, and leaving our lives quicker.

4  WE ARE LESS TOLERANT

It seems that before most of us put up with unpleasant feelings thinking they were “normal” and part of everyday life. Many of us have a shorter fuse now. Putting up with other’s anger, resistance to change, complaining, and judgmental attitudes is becoming less tolerable. What we were willing to endure from a friend we used to be dependent on daily, may change substantially. We might need to let the relationship go completely or at the least, get in contact with them less often.

We may feel like we are doing something wrong by detaching, but if it makes us feel relieved or better (it stops OUR anger, complaining, or judging them), it’s helping both of you be less dependent on each other.

5  OF WHAT TYPE OF CONNECTION WE HAVE

For years, many of us were crazy busy thinking that doing things for others was loving. The more we did the more we would be loved. Recently, we’ve realized that’s usually not the case. What we thought of as loving was often going overboard and making sacrifices to feel needed. This pattern is common with parents and their children, and between couples.

But more than ever before, it seems to be getting more difficult to keep making sacrifices without feeling resentful or used. Maybe we are finally figuring out that there is a difference between needing someone and loving them.

6  OF THE PUSH FOR US TO CHANGE

Having a dependent part of a relationship or needing someone for something is often a way to keep it the same so no one abandons the other. Yet, whether we like it or not, relationships are always changing and evolving. That doesn’t necessarily mean to end the relationships altogether, it means to change with it.

7  OF OUR INCREASING DESIRE FOR SOLITUDE

Maybe you are one of us that are spending, or at least wanting to spend, more time alone. It seems like we need more time to recharge, to unwind, and most of all, to reflect and work through things.

Are you finding yourself reacting to others differently? Are your long-term relationships getting more difficult to manage? Is your alone time becoming more important? Here are 7 ways we are becoming less dependent on others.

Summary

Maybe you are experiencing most of these seven ways, or perhaps you relate to only one or two. What’s important is to understand that you are not alone.

There is a massive mind shift going on to take the dysfunction out of relationships.

Whether you are the one to initiate letting go of the dependency or the receiver,  trust that after the dependent habit is broken you both will be aware of the benefits.
