Why We’re Losing Our Fascination for the Famous or Well-Known

It used to be that we admired the famous and well-known. It was the possibility that we to could have success, wealth, beauty, talent, a lavish lifestyle, and importance. It was a gigantic motivator!

Now, for many of us, the fascination with the famous and well-known is dimming. We find ourselves going from just not that excited, to indifferent, to even a little off-putting, depending on the individual.

This shift of our perspective could be with anyone famous and well-known…

  • Entertainment Celebrities
  • Monarchies
  • Government Leaders
  • Billionaires
  • Business Leaders
  • Influencers
  • Athletes

What’s Causing this Massive Divestment in the Famous and Well-Known?

1   AI AND SOCIAL MEDIA

With the help of AI and social media, we have access to more information about everyone. For those who are famous or well-known, this information is often updated several times a day from hundreds of different sources.

We often have too much information, and too frequently, about that individual—so much so that we see all their flaws. This takes away the mystique and often lowers our appeal for them.

Another Reason We Might be Losing Our Fascination is…

2   THEY’RE SELLING OUT

We are increasingly seeing famous and well-known individuals compromise their moral compass and show reluctance to demonstrate any real courage when personal gain is involved. Look at those who get paid to endorse products they don’t really use that often, if at all.

Another Reason We Might be Losing Our Fascination is…

3   BEING AWARE OF THEIR UNFAIR ADVANTAGES

It’s becoming more apparent that much of the famous and well-known’s popularity, status, and wealth is not the result of passion and hard work, but rather because of one or more of these…

  • Inheritance of titles, property, or money.
  • Favoritism and exclusive opportunities, such as being chosen for awards, or enrollment in Ivy League Universities.
  • Favorable tax systems.
  • Parents’ reputation, connections, influence, or wealth.
  • Market Dominance by forcing competitors out of business. Sometimes they buy up and shut down competitors. Sometimes they lower prices or offer faster service so others can’t compete. Sometimes they spend enormous amounts of money on marketing. Sometimes they buy favoritism with lawmakers.

Once the competition is not a threat, they usually set higher prices, lower the quality, offer slower services, and limit consumer choices.

Another Reason We Might be Losing Our Fascination is…

4   SOME FLAUNT THEIR STATUS AND WEALTH

It’s getting harder for the famous and well-known to impress us by showing off what money and status can buy, such as expensive cars, fashion, and holding or attending extravagant events.

Another Reason We Might be Losing Our Fascination is…

5  THAT THEY TEND TO HURT THE ENVIRONMENT

Not all, but a large proportion of the famous and well-known contribute disproportionately to environmental destruction, as their carbon footprints vastly exceed those of ordinary people.

Some of the ways are…

  • An above-normal consumption of goods.
  • The operation of private jets and yachts.
  • Most of all, the investments and influence in corporations that emit vast amounts of greenhouse gases.

Another Reason We Might be Losing Our Fascination is…

6   THAT WE ARE CHANGING

One way we are shifting is that most of us have shorter attention spans, which makes our fascination with an individual more fleeting. They can rise and fall quickly because our interest can change rapidly.

Another way we are changing is that most of us aren’t enjoying relationships with others like we used to before COVID. Many of us are turning inward to get a better sense of self and become fascinated with who that is.

What are Two Advantages of Losing Our Fascination with the Famous and Well-Known?

It Helps Us Feel Worthier

When we lose our fascination with the famous and well-known, we often stop feeling inadequate, not good enough, and always wanting to improve our finances, material possessions, appearance, abilities, and social circle.

It Helps Us Focus on Our Authentic Self

When we lose our fascination with the famous and well-known, it can help us become fully aware of who we are.
