35 Signs We Are Breaking Away from the Herd

A large number of us are beginning to mentally, if not physically, disengage from institutions, organizations, authorities, corporations, and even social groups. If AI and job losses continue at this pace, there will be more of us breaking away from the herd.

35 Signs We Are Breaking Away from the Herd

When we’re…

1   Wanting more alone time than previously.

2   Noticing that interacting with certain individuals or groups makes us feel exhausted or drained.

3   Making more decisions on our own.

4   Not blindly trusting others as often.

5  Relieved when we have less interaction with some groups.

6  Starting to pay more attention to our own thoughts and feelings, rather than those of others.

7   Not as afraid to say NO sometimes.

8  Losing interest in participating in the latest trends, such as attending destination weddings, staying up-to-date with fashion, or buying the newest gadget.

9  Finding ourselves being more honest with others and ourselves.

10  Getting sick and tired of trying to prove our worth or living up to someone else’s expectations.

11  Beginning to question some common beliefs, like “hard work pays off.”

12  Not able to physically keep up with the herd, like 10+hour workdays or mandatory overtime.

13  Noticing our fear of breaking away is disappearing.

14  Spending more time in individual pastimes such as binge watching, long baths, reading, listening to music, cooking, gardening, and doing artistic things.

15  Having less of a concern for validation from others.

16  Feeling less guilty than before about not being as productive.

17  Aware that social pressures to join in group activities, behaviors, or lifestyles are becoming annoying or even irritating.

18  Having a hard time following the rules.

19  Less willing to listen to others who are close-minded, judgmental, or angry.

20  Becoming more aware that there is a difference between being “loved” and being “needed”(used).

21  Noticing that breaking away from the herd often forces us to look inward to confront our truths, fears, and desires.

22  Less willing to bend over backwards to make unhappy, self-centered, controlling people feel better about themselves.

23  Tired of the judgments, opinions, and pressures of the herd.

24  Evaluating whether the security of the herd is worth the sacrifices.

25  Starting to daydream of escaping the herd, such as quitting our job when we win the lottery.

26  Not as anxious about the thought of being different or left out.

27   Beginning to dread interaction with the herd.

28  Not being as focused on trying to impress others.

29  Having less of a need to hide the truth.

30  Less inclined to discuss our problems and wanting input from others.

31  Not being able to pay attention to certain individuals or groups.

32  Feeling trapped in the herd.

33  Not able to let go of some decisions made by the leaders or the herd.

34  Resentful when doing activities for the herd that we don’t want to do.

35  Willing to open up for greater personal and spiritual growth.

Disadvantages and Advantages of Breaking Away from the Herd

DISADVANTAGES OF BREAKING AWAY FROM THE HERD

1   In the herd, we don’t need to decide; just follow.

2   The herd offers us the illusion of security, gives us a direction, and saves us the effort of thinking.

3  Being in the herd makes it easier to suppress looking inward and dealing with our emotional issues.

ADVANTAGES OF BREAKING AWAY FROM THE HERD

1   One of the biggest advantages of breaking away, even if it’s in one area of our lives, is the ability to discover who we really are. Most of us are not aware of how much influence others have on how we operate and who we think we are.

2   Another advantage is that breaking away gives us freedom to do what we want, when we want, without social pressures.
