7 Reasons Why Most of Us Are Experiencing a Spiritual Shift

EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE CHANGING

Because we are going through so much change so quickly, both personally and collectively, it would make sense that most of us are also experiencing a spiritual shift. Even a few years ago, taking things slower and making small, moderate changes was easier. But with the help of social media, severe weather events, extreme political positions, inflation, ongoing violence, the threat of AI, economic inequality, and religious unrest, it’s probably making our typical spiritual beliefs and practices be questioned.

A Major Reason Why We Might be Experiencing a Spiritual Shift Is…

1  ORGANIZED RELIGION

If we are one of the declining organized religious churches, there are several reasons why we would be questioning our religion more now than previously. We might be having serious doubts about the teachings. We might be tired of feeling guilty or bad about who we are or our behaviors. We might disagree when the leaders tell us to judge other individuals, groups, or religions.

Another Reason Why We Might be Experiencing a Spiritual Shift Is…

2  BEING DISTRACTED

If we are constantly being distracted by stress with our work, our relationships, being able to make ends meet, loved ones going through problems, health issues, or any other difficulties, there is a tendency to let the spiritual practices slide.   It’s hard to make them a high priority when day-to-day events demand most of our attention. It might get so stressful that we might be tempted to resort to numbing devices to distract us even more, such as taking pills, drinking alcohol, overeating, overconsuming caffeine, or overspending.

Another Reason Why We Might be Experiencing a Spiritual Shift Is…

3  THE TERM GOD

Many of us are starting to cringe when we hear the term “God.” It can easily trigger our memories of unpleasant spiritual experiences or negative events. It could cause us internal conflict when God appears in some religions as a white male, implying that females or anyone else is less godly. Maybe we’re struggling to come up with a new term that feels right to us.

4  HATERS SEEM TO BE WINNING

A few years back, almost everybody had morals or a code of ethics they lived by, especially those who belonged to organized religions. Not so much now! For many, the importance of having a strong moral character seems to be pushed aside, dormant, or forgotten. Everywhere we look, it appears there are no consequences for others’ unethical behaviors, which can tempt most of us to follow their example.

5  SO MANY STRESSFUL EVENTS

In the past, most of us found our safety or security from things OUTSIDE of ourselves. That means we counted heavily on external traditions, systems, and policies others established and enforced, such as financial systems, corporations, government, our parents, and our cultural traditions. That is changing. We’re finding out that things OUTSIDE of us are not as dependable as they used to be and don’t always do things that are in everyone’s highest good.

Another Reason Why We Might be Experiencing a Spiritual Shift Is…

6   OUR INABILITY TO TRUST OTHERS

Lying and misleading others has become an epidemic and almost “normal.” At the same time, when others do have the courage to be honest, they are often cast out or punished in some way. Look at whistleblowers. This can shake our spiritual belief in “trusting in others.”

Another Reason Why We Might be Experiencing a Spiritual Shift Is…

7   SEEING VERY LITTLE EVIDENCE

Any type of fear, stress, or anger tends to block us from being able to see much of the spiritual evidence that can help us have faith and guide us. We might not be able to see many miracles or evidence of the sea parting. So, it’s getting harder to believe in a “loving source.” Maybe that’s why so many are turning into different variations of non-believers.

Summary

No matter what the causes or how big our spiritual shift is, the best way to go through it is to pay attention and watch it change. Trying to deny it, resist it, or judge it usually makes the experience harder on us. It’s difficult to believe everything is always changing in our highest good, even our spiritual beliefs.
