One of my longtime career and life coaching clients that I admire is Margaret Burnison. Very seldom do I see people get out of their fear, ignore what others think, and treat their career like an adventure like she did.
I recently asked Margaret to tell her story of overcoming the fear with her profession. This is it.
Here’s a recap of her story:
I love plants. I had the opportunity after leaving a well paying job to try my dream job. Have you ever looked back on something, an idea, an opportunity, and said if I only did this. I couldn’t done this my life would be better. If I had only… I was in that mode. I was so tired of being in so much fear of trying something new regardless how it looked to others. So my dream job was to go into landscaping. Much lower pay and heaven forbid what my friends and family would think. And I have my husband looking at me and saying “You’re going into what? How much is this paying?” But it doesn’t matter. I wanted to do this, I love plants, I wanted to see what I could do with it.
Who was going to hire a woman of my age? I had no idea where to start but I was going to try anyway. I started applying and I go a job. I was so excited. And then I went to work. That was a very interesting eye opener on this really wasn’t my dream job.
It was such a good lesson because I tried this. This has given my courage to do things I wouldn’t have never thought I could do. I look on this experience as a proud moment in my life. I had the guts to try something and I don’t have to worry about “I could da, would da, should da, because I did do it and I am so happy.
