After twenty-some years in the publishing and printing business, I was getting little hints (I call this my intuition or gut feelings) my career was going to change.
- The actual work became “ho mum.”
- I started running into a lot of obstacles, whether it was complications in meeting deadlines, missed communications, or playing endless phone tag with customers and vendors.
- I noticed more and more I could think of dozens of things I much rather be doing than working.
- It was hard to concentrate, which was very unusual for me.
- Whenever I watched or heard of experiences that inspired me, I would tear up and practically weep over it. I wanted to do something like that!
- And, especially, I had for the first time in my life a strong desire to really “make a difference” in the world.
It took five months of praying several times a day before I heard the answer. My intuition, inner voice, gut feelings, God, whatever you want to call it, gave me an answer that was something I never would have thought of myself nor wanted to even pursue.
The answer I got was to write a book and begin public speaking. Well, I never thought I was much of a writer and my biggest fear was public speaking.
I had to test my intuition to make sure I really heard it correctly. So, I asked “If this is what you want me to do, then give me the chapter titles for the book.” The next morning as soon as I woke up, I grabbed a pen and wrote down the 12 chapters.
Looking back, there are three things I had to do to find my dream job…
- I had to really, really, really want it.
- I had to listen to my intuition, even though it surprised me and wasn’t what I thought it “should” be.
- I did it despite my fears, judgments, and resistance against it.
Now, I can’t imagine having a better job. I write, speak and “make a difference” in people’s lives every week.
