13 Reasons Having a Conservative Mindset is Difficult

THE SPEED THINGS ARE HAPPENING

The speed at which things are changing makes having a conservative mindset that honors traditions, and customs extremely hard. Even 5 years ago it was easier for conservatives to take things slower and make small moderate changes. But with the help of social media, severe weather events, extreme political views, gun violence, the verge of AI exploding, the wealth gap widening, religious unrest, and corporate greed, it’s making having a conservative or traditional frame of mind very difficult to maintain.

IMPORTANT!

Probably every one of us, even the extreme liberal mindset, can identify with having each of these reasons from time to time. It is not limited to just the extreme conservative mindset.

Here are 13 Reasons Why Having a Conservative Mindset is Difficult…

1  RESIST CHANGE

Probably the biggest factor in making this period of time hard on conservative mindsets is that they tend to resist change. If they are resisting the almost constant changes that are needed now, they will mount up causing more drastic changes for them when they finally happen. A good example is living in a flood zone without selling their home, or at least, making major preparations.

2  AVOID SELF-IMPROVEMENT

Conservative mindsets tend to reject self-reflection and personal growth. Because they are usually unwilling to change their thoughts and perceptions about most things, this makes keeping healthy relationships difficult. It’s probably one of the reasons for divorces.

3  CAN CREATE ISOLATION

Conservative mindsets tend to be so tough and headstrong that being in their physical presence often scares people. They can be unpleasant to be around, which makes others try to stay clear of them as much as possible. Have you noticed how some are declining holiday dinner invitations because some relative will be attending?

4  ARE OFTEN DISAPPOINTED

Because conservative mindsets tend to obey whatever their leader says without question, it causes them to feel let down and even angry when their leaders fall short of their expectations.

5   FEEL JUDGED AND ABANDONED

Conservative mindsets tend to use others to “get” something. For instance, using others to help them “get” more money, to have sex with, or to do services for them, with very little in return. What makes it difficult is that others catch on to what they are doing and start judging them behind their back or they get out of the situation as soon as they can. A good example is that Amazon’s turnover rate is very high and they are beginning to run out of applicants to fill their warehouse positions.

6  CAN GET CAUGHT

Because conservative mindsets tend to place attaining more money, property, and possessions a high priority, they will often be a little dishonest, deceptive, or even try to cheat in their favor.  Two things can make it difficult. One is it can put them on guard, afraid they will be found out. The other is that they would get caught and have to pay the price.

7   FIGHT

Because conservative mindsets tend to think the enemy is other people or groups, they often get into verbal and physical fights, even with others on their side. Look at the Republican-led House of Representatives fighting with each other.

8   PHYSICALLY ILL

Conservative mindsets tend to be constantly upset, angry, or enraged with someone or something. That often causes negative emotions to build up and fester in their bodies until they become ill or have a hard time recovering from an injury.

9   LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE

Besides being angry, conservative mindsets tend to be critical of others and close-minded. On top of that, they usually shut out other individuals and groups that are different from them. So that leaves associating with others who are just as angry and judgmental. That makes it very difficult to rise above it.

10  THE NEED TO WIN

Conservative mindsets tend to make winning everything, many times even to the point they are willing to lie, cheat, and fight to win.  There are two difficult parts to this. One is that winning is only temporary, which makes it hard to keep winning constantly. The other difficult part is that their self-respect lowers a notch with each loss.

11  LIVE IN FEAR

Not only do conservative mindsets tend to blame anyone or anything else for their situations, but they often are afraid of retaliation. They are often terrified that others will take revenge and do to them, what they did to others. Maybe that’s a reason to want to keep guns—to protect themselves.

12   FRUSTRATED

Because conservative mindsets tend to be so resistant to change, they often want to retreat to the way it was in the past. What makes it really difficult for them is that so many things are quickly changing, it’s almost impossible to slow down,  let alone go back. Time is probably one of the things they are trying to fight against.

13  SELF-SABOTAGE

It can easily be so difficult for those with conservative mindsets that they do things to punish themselves, especially if they are…

  • Unable to follow the rules they want others to be punished for breaking.
  • They are not consistently winning.
  • Are still adamant that inner work (the practice of changing negative thoughts and perceptions) is for the weak.

Common self-sabotaging examples are drinking alcohol excessively, over-medicating, smoking cigarettes, overeating, and becoming dangerous drivers.

Summary

As you can see having a conservative mindset isn’t easy! It’s like they are trying to resist, avoid, judge, and fight LOVE. Eventually, this type of mindset will wear out and transform, or die off.
