I just put a job opening for an appointment setter out on Craigslist. A guy responded that was recently laid off from a restaurant stove cleaning service in California. He made calls to set up appointments in Orange County from his home in Phoenix. He said he did quiet well, and was let go only because this was the stove cleaning business slow season in Orange County. One thing led to another and I ended up doing a career coaching session to help him think outside the box with his job hunting search.
When is it Time to Rethink Your Job Hunting Search…
When you…
- Are having no luck finding a job.
- Find jobs, but from unstable companies who end up cutting your hours or laying you off.
- Would rather work from home.
- Catch yourself applying for part-time work when you really need full-time.
I suggested he rethink the way he approached finding work. He wanted to work out of his house, loved appointment setting, but was having a hard time finding a full-time, reliable job.
I proposed he start his own appointment setter business for restaurant stove cleaning services across the United States. That way he could stay at home and manage several clients so his income didn’t depend on one company. Meanwhile, he could get the tax deductions of a small business. When we ended our call, he was going to talk to his previous boss about being his first client.
If you keep running into dead ends when job hunting, then it’s time to change your career strategy.
