I have had the honor of being a life coach to Sonja Haller. I really admire how she handled this situation. Below is her story of how she got out of fear of interacting with others.
Here’s a recap of Sonja Haller’s story…
When I was a young reporter I was really nervous about talking to people. I was struck with fear. I liked writing the stories and compiling information, but the thought of talking to people terrified me. That’s not good when that’s your job.
What I did was I prayed about it, “Please God help me get out of the fear.” I then watched and saw what came to me. The first thing that came was to deal with my shame issues. It’s very hard to converse with people when you have shame. So I worked on the shame issues, so I could be person to person.
I asked where was this fear coming from? I was nervous about how people were viewing me. Was I asking a dumb question? Or was I was too rude? Then, I shifted the way I thought about things. Sonja, it’s not about you. The story you are writing is going to be about them. It’s not even about a story, it’s just person to person. I reframed it so the spotlight was not on me, it was on them. By just by doing that, this is about what they have to say and their life, I got out of the fear.
Now I like to get on the phone with people. I like to go out in person. It’s not a problem to approach total strangers. Some may still tell me to buzz off and that’s OK because it’s not about me. Life is so much fun now. I meet so many interesting people.
