I have the honor of having Ericka Young in one of my advanced Nothing is Impossible for Business group coaching series, which is on their 26th session. I really admired how Ericka pushed through her fear to start her business. Below is her story of how she became an entrepreneur.
Here’s a recap of Ericka Young’s story of becoming a small business owner…
In 2003 I was a successful engineer and working for a while. I had a comfortable life. Yet, we were in debt and had to get our way out of it. Once we found that freedom, I knew that others needed to have that same financial freedom. It was in that moment I realized that I could do a business. In the same breath I was petrified. I was a scared as you can be.
I was scared but I looked for ways to get out of that fear. I got educated. I took a class in business planning. I got a mentor. I volunteered at my church and all these things to get comfortable with the idea of being in business. The big thing I had to do was to leave my job. I didn’t know how to do that.
One day I went to church as usual and my pastor starting talking to me, to me. The message was, you’re scared but do it anyway. What in the world is going on here. He really let me know it was OK to be afraid but you can still get out there and do what God is telling you to do. That night I woke up crying, sweating and convulsing. I was petrified of that fact I was going to have to leave my job, get out, make some changes, and get out of my comfort zone. I got it out of my system. I learned that the fear might still be there. The next morning I made my logo. I got my stationary ready. I got my business cards. I sent a letter to everyone saying I’m starting my business today.
What’s been amazing since then is that I left my job. I surprised myself when I walked in and told them I was leaving. I got 6 clients from that letter that I sent out to everyone I knew. Today, 6 ½ years later I have helped hundreds of people. I’ve spoken to crowds of 200 people. I am so glad I didn’t let the fear keep me from all that God has for me.
