I have had the honor of coaching JoAnne Musolf and to have her as my coach. I love that she calls me on my stuff.
I recently asked JoAnne to tell us how she overcomes procrastination. This is her story.
Here’s a recap of her story of wanting to delay or postpone…
One day I was at Arcadia National Park . There was a mountain there called Cadillac mountain highest point on the eastern seaboard. It’s the first place the sun hits the USA each day.
Because I like to have a lot of firsts in my life, I wanted to be the first person in the USA to see the sun. So I decided I wanted to go to the top of that mountain, but I was afraid of heights.
One day I drove my car up the mountain, and the sun came up. I called a bunch of people and said, “The sun came up!” and they said “Yeh, yeh, yeh.” There was still this niggling thing in me, telling me “You didn’t get to the top.”
A gentlemen came up to me and said, “What are you thinking honey?” I said, “Someday I would like to climb that thing.” He replied, “Why don’t you?” “I’m afraid of heights, but someday I will.” “ No you won’t.” “No I will.” He said, “I would give anything for all the times I said one day. You are never going to be as young as you are, as healthly as you are right now and trust me you will never come back and do this.” I said, “I guess I would if somebody else were there with me.”
Guess what! A guy came up and he said, “I heard your conversation. I’m climbing tomorrow and if you want to go up, I’ll take you.” I went back to the hotel and prayed for snow and wild winds because I was scared to do this.
Well, it was a bright sunny day and I showed up. This gentlemen and I started climbing the mountain and in places he had to push me up. I got to the top of the mountain and started jumping around like a maniac.
What I realized is: I had somebody to help me, somebody to tell me that I was never going to come back and do that, and I didn’t have all my life. I was holding myself back because I felt a sense of fear. There were people there to help me and if I did it then I wouldn’t have regrets. Like my company’s philosophy, your someday is now.
